Swim Program
This Free program was born out of the direct needs of children with sickle cell disease (SCD).
The Swim Program helps children with SCD in the following ways:
- Swimming is a fun way to exercise in a social environment.
- Pools are heated which signals the brain to relax and reduces stress and prevent future crisis.
- Swimming helps improve the circulatory system, dilates blood vessels and increases blood flow to reduce the occurrence of a crisis.
- Swimming helps build strong muscles and bones while improving flexibility, strength and balance.
- Studies have shown that swimming can improve awareness leading to better academic performance.
- Swimming can improve self-esteem and mood which, in turn, decreases depression and anxiety.
- The swim program offers the children and their families the opportunity to meet others coping with sickle cell disease and to establish a support system.
- The swim program removes the barrier to swimming for children suffering from SCD.
